چکیده

We use longitudinal data on children and their parents to assess the extent of intergenerational mobility in Britain. Based on data from the National Child Development Survey, a cohort of all individuals born in a week of March , we find that the extent of intergenerational mobility is limited. We report a clear intergenerational correlation between fathers and both sons and daughters in terms of labour market earnings and years of schooling. We also reveal an important asymmetry in intergenerational earnings mobility, with upward mobility from the bottom of the earnings distribution being more likely than downward mobility from the top.

The Path to Convergence: Intergenerational Occupational Mobility in Britain and the Us in Three Eras*

Late nineteenth century intergenerational occupational mobility was higher in the US than in Britain. Differences between them in this type of mobility are absent today. Using data on 10,000 US and British father and son pairs followed over two intervals (the 1860s and 1870s, and the 1880s and 1890s), we examine how this convergence occurred. The US remained more mobile then Britain through 190...

Intergenerational Occupational Mobility in Great Britain and the United States Since 1850: Comment

2003 Social scientists in general, and sociologists in particular, have long been interested in intergenerational occupational mobility. Indeed, among sociologists the interest is so common that they often refer to intergenerational occupational mobility simply as “social mobility.” Most notable among innumerable contributions to the large literature on social mobility are the landmark studies ...

Intergenerational earnings mobility: Changes across cohorts in Britain

The aim of this paper is to analyse intergenerational earnings mobility in Britain for cohorts of sons born between 1950 and 1972. Since there are no British surveys with information on both sons and their fathers’ earnings covering the above period, we consider two separate samples from the British Household Panel Survey: a first sample containing information on sons’ earnings and a set of occ...

The Role of Education for Intergenerational Income Mobility: A comparison of the United States, Great Britain, and Sweden

Previous studies have found that intergenerational income persistence is relatively high in the United States and Britain, especially as compared to Nordic countries. We compare the association between family income and sons’ earnings in the United States (National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1979), Britain (British Cohort Study 1970), and Sweden (Population Register Data, 1965 cohort), and fin...

Intergenerational Occupational Mobility Across Three Continents: Were the Americas Exceptional?

I compare rates of intergenerational occupational mobility across four countries in the late 19th century: (1) 1869-1895 Argentina, (2) 1850-1880 United States, (3) 1851-1881 Britain, and (4) 1865-1900 Norway. There was a sharp divide between Old and New World countries in terms of social mobility: Argentina and the US had similar levels of intergenerational occupational mobility, and these lev...
